MIT Anthropology is dedicated to the highest quality teaching and research in socio-cultural anthropology, attracting top-quality students and junior faculty and serving as the home for creative and challenging research projects.

The faculty, been recognized as among MIT's most accomplished with endowed professorships acknowledging outstanding research and awards for highest quality teaching. Students from across MIT flock to Anthropology for instruction and mentoring in ethnographic fieldwork.

Some of the research has received generous funding from the National Science Foundation, the Simons Center on the Social Brain, the International Design Center at Singapore University of Technology and Design, MISTI, MIT Alumni Funds, MIT Council on Education Technology and the SHASS Fund for Teaching and Learning. Our faculty and students continue to win prestigious fellowships and research awards.

Nonetheless, we face challenges in supporting student research and collaborations with faculty. For example, we are currently working with a graduate student interested in online communication to develop portions of our instruction in research methods for the internet with MIT support. We need to do more. Unfortunately, the global financial crisis has made competition for funding students and fieldwork even more competitive than historically.
