IAP 2022
TWF 10-1:30
*12 units, HASS-S*
A blanket petition for HASS-S credit for the IAP 2022 semester has been approved on behalf of all enrolled students.
This class examines contemporary movements for reparative justice for harms committed during European colonization in Africa and the Americas. It addresses: the historical events for which these movements seek redress; the movements’ historical antecedents; strategies currently employed by claimants; the affordances of the various apparatuses being employed to bring forward demands for justice; and the challenges and opportunities these claims face. We will be working alongside practitioners currently engaged in making these claims over the course of IAP, with students meeting in person with Prof. Edoh, and practitioners joining us remotely for some of the sessions. The focus of the course during IAP will be on land-based claims for reparative justice by Indigenous and Afro-descended peoples in the Americas.
Readings are drawn primarily from anthropology, but also from history, political philosophy, and law. Through this combination of conceptual and applied work, students will contribute to current social justice efforts while also learning to articulate critical perspectives on movements for reparations for historical violence.
